All of our friends know we love shopping at Costco, especially when traveling. Recently we stopped at the Costco food court in Honolulu, Hawaii while on our South Pacific Cruise. While planning our trips both in the US and in other countries, we always search for local product options not available in Texas. You just never know what you’ll find. I have previously posted on our visits to Costco Canada and Costco France. I’ll now add the Costco Honolulu (Iwilei) to our list. A recent 2024 news article listed this location as the “busiest Costco in the world”.
Exterior Food Court
One of the first things noticeable at this location is that the food court is outside the store. The menu options are virtually the same as at home, except I don’t recall us having the chicken and bacon sandwich. I had hoped for a Hawaiian specialty on the menu but didn’t see one. Another difference at this location is that you are required to self-scan your Costco card or app to enter the store.
Hawaii & SPAM (no, not the email kind!)
I am referring to the canned meat kind. The popularity of SPAM in Hawaii goes back to World War II, when the luncheon meat was served to GIs. Hawaii residents have the highest per capita consumption of SPAM in the United States. SPAM, eggs and rice is even on the McDonald’s menu. It’s no surprise Costco sells it by the case and in multiple flavors. The Korean Bulgogi flavor sounds interesting.
Lots of Hawaiian products
There were so many fun Hawaiian items available: shirts, chocolate, tea, nuts, cookies, coffee, surf boards, jewelry and more. Danny couldn’t resist buying one of those Hawaiian shirts.
The fresh sashimi and different flavors of poke looked delicious.
Like the Costco stores in Louisiana, both wine and hard liquor are available inside in the store. I wish Texas would do this too. The Hawaiian passion fruit pineapple and the mai tai cocktails look like pool party options to me.
Our “excursion” to Costco Honolulu while on this cruise was lots of fun. Who knows which Costco you’ll find us at next?
