My travel memory began with a craving for ice cream…
I recently had a craving for ice cream which prompted a memory of Paulette’s K-pie in Memphis. An amazing dessert that Danny and I shared on my birthday vacation last September. While researching things to do and places to eat during our trip in Memphis, TN, I found an article in Memphis Magazine about Paulette’s K-Pie. The description and photos were too tempting to miss, so we popped in for lunch one afternoon.
There’s a sandbar peninsula in the Mississippi River called Mud Island located just northwest of downtown Memphis. There you’ll find the riverside community of Harbor Town, where construction began in 1989 for a master planned community. This is where Paulette’s Restaurant is located.
Paulette’s serves their famous Kahlua Mocha Parfait Pie, now known simply as K-Pie. Paulette’s first opened in 1974, before they relocated to Harbor Town, and they’ve been in business 48 years now. Paulette was one of the original owners of the restaurant and this dessert has been on the menu since their opening.
What is Paulette’s K-Pie?
When we arrived, we found a quaint restaurant bursting with European charm. Since it was a beautiful day, we ate out on the front patio. Lunch was delicious, but our main goal for the day was a piece of that k-pie! The dessert arrived at the table and our slice was almost six inches tall. The article reported that an entire pie weighs about six pounds!
So how do I describe this pie? Pecans, butter and coconut makes up the crust. Then there is a mound of coffee ice cream with crushed toffee, topped with whipped cream and chocolate shavings. Added to this decadence, to drizzle over the top is a shot of Kahlua. WOW, it was delicious and easily the best dessert we ate while in Memphis. Oh, and did I mention it was only $10?
This pie was huge and certainly big enough to share, but on second thought, maybe not. After enjoying the first few bites, we quickly realized we should have ordered two! Do yourself a favor, if you’re ever in Memphis don’t miss this pie. If you’ve had this pie, share your comments.
